The new MP for Amber Valley has praised the ethos of encouraging pupils to reach their full potential following a visit to the David Nieper Academy in Alfreton.

Linsey Farnsworth MP was given a tour of the David Nieper Academy by Headteacher Richard White and senior representatives from the Christopher Nieper Educational Trust.

It is the first secondary school Linsey had visited since she was elected, on Friday 20 September, and provided a platform for her to engage with students, meet teachers and discuss the importance of education within the local community.

During the tour, the MP was able to see learning in action, dropping into a music and a 3D Art and Design class, followed by a special Q&A session with student leaders at the academy.

Following the tour, the Headteacher Richard White, Dr Kathryn Hobbs, CEO of the Christopher Nieper Education Trust, and Christopher Nieper OBE, discussed a number of key issues for the school, including the importance of having a well-structured curriculum which focusses on both vocational and academic excellence.

Dr Kathryn Hobbs, Chief Executive of the Christopher Nieper Education Trust, said: “We were delighted to meet Linsey and her team, and are looking forward to our pupils across the Trust benefitting from future visits.

“The ability for pupils to meet visitors such as our local MP is an exceptionally valuable contribution to our wider curriculum.”

MP Linsey Farnsworth said: “Coming from a working-class background, I know how important it is for children to be encouraged in their aspirations. It’s equally important that they are given the opportunities to succeed.

“It was fantastic to visit David Nieper Academy and to hear more about the school’s ethos of giving pupils the confidence to achieve their ambitions. I was incredibly impressed by the students I met, who talked to me about their learning and plans for the future. The fact that they were so articulate and engaged is a real testament to the teachers and learning environment of the school.”

She added: “Breaking down barriers to opportunity is a key mission for this government and I look forward to working with David Nieper Academy and other schools in Amber Valley.”
